RS-485 Network

Date: 6/26/00

Introduction: This application note demonstrates how to connect an RS-485 network to the SmartSwitch.

Background: The SmartSwitch is an RS-232 to RS485 converter with automatic direction control. The SmartSwitch can operate at baud rates from 1200 to 115.2k and handle word sizes from 9 to 12 bits.

How it works: The following schematic demonstrates how to connect a network of four AnswerMan Seniors to the SmartSwitch. The network is setup for 9600 bps with 8 data bits, and 1 stop bit. There are terminating resistors on the SmartSwitch and U4 (the last AnswerMan in the network). Please note that different names for each AnswerMan is required.
